    Default Buying a friends pc

I am buying a friends old computer. The reason I am buying this desktop is to be able to play Star Craft 2 (amongst other games) without a hitch. My laptop sucks for gaming. I am not sure what the asking price is, but if I want to replace a few extra parts in it to enhance gaming what exactly would I need? I am not looking for this thing to be a gaming monster but I would like to be able to play games at the highest graphics settings or close to it. I know a new graphics card is a must but would I need anything else?

It really depends on what's already there (of course), but a better CPU (faster clock, more cache, ...) and faster and/or more RAM are the other things that will affect gaming most noticeably. If you want to get really crazy about it, certain RAID configurations or a SSD will decrease load times, but that's almost certainly secondary to graphics processor, CPU and RAM.

So do you think it would be worth it to buy the pc from him cheaper and upgrade it or build my own which would be around 600

since I don't know anything about your friend's pc or how much you're paying for it, how could I possibly answer this question?

Alright well more or less this is the scenario. I will not be paying more than 250 for the computer. Since I will really only need a better graphics card (not even sure of this because he just bought a new one),CPU, and upgrade Ram to me it wouls be worth it unless I am totally missing something.

When I think of gaming machine I think of spending 1500 dollars. Many of my friends have not spent nearly as much and are capable of playing games on the highest settings. Unless I take gaming machine out of context.

I am not sure of the exact specs because right now he is letting his brother borrow it for whatever reason. Buying from him seems more of a hassle now that I think about it so I believe I am going the route of building my own from scratch. This is what I have come up with so far.

This is just speculation. I am well aware I did not include a case or RAM. I might have an extra case and RAM lying around somewhere. I am going to have a few people look this over and give me suggestions. I guess the sole question is, will this be able to handle games to their full potential?

How can you be so inept and still have "an extra case or ram lying around"

I just built a similar machine to that, but with a GeForce 9800 card. It plays StarCraft 2 on the highest settings.

My only suggestion is not to cheap out on the PSU. Linkworld is garbage, I've been using the OCZ brand PSU's and haven't had an issue. Also, get RAM that matches the specs of the AM3 board and not some PC100 crap you have "laying around." I would get 2x 2GB sticks of OCZ, I think they are on sale.
