Default So Im thinking about getting an NFA toy...

For those of you who do not know what NFA things are, they basically include stuff that would normally be illegal. Machine guns, grenade launchers, short barreled rifles and shotguns, and silencers.

I have been tossing around the idea of getting another AR and making it a registered short barreled rifle. And I was looking around at some pics and I think Im gonna do it.

Im aiming for something that will look like this in the end, except with an EOTech on the top, and a light that doesnt cost $500.

    That's pretty sweet.

I'd personally go with something fully automatic, because if you're going to have an illegal weapon, you might as well...

I mean its going to be legal, thats why Its an NFA item. You can get them legally as long as you jump through all the hoops and red tape.

And legal Fully auto M16 are like $15,000. I can do this for around the same price of a normal AR + $200 for the NFA stamp.

And I can always make a lightning link if I want.

Oh I see, I thought you were just going to have an illegal firearm.

Well if that's the case, the AR-15 is probably your best bet.

I might just end up making my current AR a SBR.

    That's awesome, man.

One day I think I'll get around to doing that.

If I do though, it'll probably be a short barreled saiga.

You better get a drum mag for it while you still can.

Those drums are already hard enough to get. The people who make them dont have them instock too often.

Is there any point where you just look at all your guns and just say you know what this is enough.

So I just got off the phone with my dad who is a lawyer, and e-mailed him all the forms and we are going to get started on this.

Yea, I was thinking about going with a 6.8 SPC, but short uppers for those are hard to find, plus my lower is marked 5.56, and since its an NFA item, id like to keep every thing legit.

It's perfectly legal to change calibers on an NFA weapons. There's no permanent alteration of the registered part, which, in this case, is the receiver, so there's no technicality you can get in trouble for. If you really, really want to make sure, all you have to do is notify the BATFE in writing that your weapon is multi-caliber. If you want to do that, include calibers it will be used to fire, as well as barrel lengths it will have. But it's really unnecessary, because, like I said, as long as there's no permanent change to the receiver, there's no infringement of the law. If you do decide to notify the BATFE, include your name, the weapon's identification information (SN).

I don't know how effective a short-barreled 5.56mm rifle will be. Correct me if I'm wrong, but as a high-velocity round, a fired 5.56mm bullet achieves most of its energy through velocity, caused by a long barrel? Heck, you might even get some powder going off outside of the barrel if you go short enough.

Didn't you say in another thread that you can get the AR-15 in 9MM? If so that or .45 would be what I'd go with. Not sure on the .45 round. Hey crunker what was that .45 sub that I peed in my panties over? The one that the bolt pivoted downward...

Pffft, instead of a pistol round, go with .50beowolf.

.458 SOCOM is indeed more powerful than the .50 Beowulf round, and from what I can see, there are no factory-made short .50 Beowulf uppers/barrels out there. Of course, the ballistics I'm looking at are from Wikipedia, provided by the manufacturer, and probably tested from rifle-length uppers. So, in an SBR, I honestly can't say with any degree of certainty which would be more powerful.
    http://www.shop.umlautarms.com/categ...?categoryId=74

And MANY manufacturers make AR-15 uppers in 9mm. Olympic Arms, Colt, Gemtech's Talon (integrally suppressed), Bushmaster, et al.

As far as the .45 SMG, maybe you mean the KRISS Super V? Though great in concept, I have unfortunately not heard a single decent thing about them in terms of reliability or actual practicality. MK5 looks great too, but it's not come out yet despite the ETA release date being like six months ago. Sad.

Alot of people make .45 ACP uppers, but they if you want something with high capacity (over 10 rnds) then you have to get a special lower with a wider magwel to accommodate grease gun mags.

I had a subordinate go the SBR route a few years ago. It was surprisingly simple and did not take as much time as I had thought. I'm still considering registering the Thompson as a SBR and getting rid of that 16" bbl.

    FM, you're back!

    Do it man!

I never really liked the way those thompsons looked with the longer barrel.

    Also, post pics of it.

I'll keep you all posted. The wife wants me to sell the Tommy gun, and since I bought it for her in the first place, we'll see what happens. Also, with the house I may be finally breaking down and getting a Type 03 FFL. Nothing like wholesale prices and direct shipping on old military weapons.

For old guns you can get a relic license. I cant remember exactly what its called, but it allows you to get older firearms shipped to your home with no FFL needed.

That's the Type 03 FFL, aka Curio and Relics License. The ATF keeps a list of C&R weapons, mostly military small arms over 50 years old, though there are some exceptions. Some NFA weapons also fall under C&R status.

Fuck that. Become a Class 2 SOT/FFL 07 holder. Expensive, but you can get/make just whatever the Hell you want.

While the Thompson is a sweet firearm, they sell in the 13-16k range for a West Hurley model, the Colts and WWII contract guns start at about 30K. Then a 100 round drum sells for 5-600 bones. Not a cheap date. Though you can get the stick magazines cheap.

Have you considered just getting a drop in auto sear they are a lot cheaper than buying the whole gun and transferable to any AR based rifle you own.

DIAS for an AR will cost you about $15,000. SBR will be MUCH cheaper.

I saw a WWII Thompson at a gun show a while back for $30,000.
