    Talking 'Bout to start cookin'

Well, my sister came from Texas and my brother and mother are driving my household goods down. Not wanting to pay another $200 restaurant tab I instead spent about $500 to cookout. 12 pounds of super jumbo shrimp, 3 dozen blue crabs, 15 pounds of potatoes, eight ears of corn, a 100-qt stockpot and burner, and plenty of other edibles and hardware. Not to mention a few cases of beer. I guess I'll get started in a couple hours. I still need to pick up a piece of plywood to use as a table.

Nothing like family hanging out in the backyard, eating good and drinking beer.

I'm pretty jealous right about now. That sounds like it's going to make for an awesome cookout.

Dude, crawfish are the most vile animals.

Honestly, they have to be the most disgusting animal that humans eat.

After dissecting them, I learned that the parts that people eat are mostly lungs, digestive glands and stuff, and gonads.

There are two cord-like muscles that run along the back, about .5cm in diameter, and that's about the only "meat" in them.

I mean, I used to love them, but after dissecting them, I simply will not eat those things

People only eat the tail and claw meat. Some people suck the head, but all you really get is fat and juice.

    Crawfish are the shit.

Chickens are a disgusting animal that people eat. They live in and eat their own shit.

Have you guys ever had crawfish cooked right? Like with sausage, corn, potatoes, mushrooms, and onions in the mix?

And you say crawfish are nasty because people eat the lungs and shit. By that logic all animals are nasty.

I used to work at McDonalds, and remeber reading the ingredients on the burger patty box. It said "Beef (kungs, heart, kidney, etc, etc)" you get the point. And i only know a hand full of people that suck the heads.

The general flavor of crawfish is pretty terrible. Then again I'm not a big fan of much of anything that comes out of the water. Well other than shrimp and tuna fish. Also squid are tasty. Come to think of it there are only a few things that come out of water that I don't like. Crawfish are one of those things though.

You have never had them cooked right then. Crawfish are something you have to know what you are doing to enjoy. You have to know how to peel them, and the cook has to know how to cook them. If you dont know how to peel them then it takes so long to eat them that it sucks. I can have the tail meat out in like 3 seconds on most. And if the cook sucks, then its all fucked.

I've never tried eel, but would be willing to. Alligator is a bit tough, but has a very nice flavor to it. You should give snake a shot some time if you like gator. It's actually quite tasty.

??? You eat the meat in the tail, and in the claws if they are big enough to bother with. Not the lungs, not the digestive organs, not the gonads, not any of that. Who told you that the lungs, etc. are what you eat?

I also doubt that they could have gotten "12 pounds of super jumbo shrimp, 3 dozen blue crabs, 15 pounds of potatoes, eight ears of corn... ...and plenty of other edibles... ...Not to mention a few cases of beer", or the equivalent, in any restaurant for anything close to $200. I assume the $200 figure cited by fm would have bought much less of a feast in a restaurant. Plus there's the fact that the $500 included the stockpot, burner, and "other hardware", which they now own and will presumably get plenty more use out of over the coming years.

Well, it ended up great! I cooked everything else first, boiling the shrimp for a few minutes at the end. Then I rigged up the basket, put half a can of Old Bay on the crabs, and steamed them with the water from the boil.

I was going to but at $3.99 a pound, and with only two of us who eat them, I figured it wasn't worth the effort. As for the head sucking thing, I tried it at a Chinese buffet (of all places) last time I had them. Not bad, probably much better with a good flavorful broil.

Yep, the seafood was only $100 or so. The stockpot, utensils, burner and a propane tank (I only grill with charcoal so needed a cylinder) were roughly $250. The other $150 went to beer, Boone's Farm, vegetables and seasonings, and grillables such as burgers, boudin and southern-style hot dogs.

A few months ago $200 got five of us each a small seafood entree, a couple appetizers and perhaps one drink apiece.

We bought 40 lbs of cooked crawfish last week. It was like $180. They are expensive right now.

Well, no one is here this weekend. But now I have my grill. I picked up a 15 pound Boston butt earlier and some cheapo BBQ sauce with the intention of cutting the butt into thirds, smoking it and throwing on the sauce. Now I have decided to pick up the ingredients to make my own sauce instead of letting Kraft do the job. I'm going for NC style and will be trying this recipe. As is usual for me I am cooking on impulse, so the meat will not have time to marinate or have a rub applied. Should still turn out okay, got the charwood going with a few lumps of charcoal for good measure, about to soak the hickory chips and will be preparing the sauce as soon as I get the ingredients.

Ribeye was also on sale, at $4.99 a pound. Unfortunately, all were fifteen to twenty pounds and I had no desire to spend $100 on a piece of meat. I was able to find some Bud Dry down this way. I like the taste (for a macro) and have to admit that the novelty is appealing also as Bud Dry is one of the only Budweiser products that is hard to find. Bud Ice Light also comes to mind but I never cared for it too much. The same store also carried Schaefer Light and Schlitz, two other beers I last saw in South Carolina. For good measure I picked up some daiquiri and pina colada mixes. Guess I'll pick up a bag of ice too. Gotta love the ice machines down here, never saw them further north.

Anyway, I've been honing my grilling skills over the past few years and feel as though I am improving. My biggest problem is I enjoy grilling too much and do not want to call it a day, sometimes resulting in overcooked food. At least now I can entertain my friends and family. Too bad none are down this way. Hell, maybe we can arrange a get together with some of the CD users from LA sometime. Do some shooting, drink some beer and cook something from land and/or sea.

Now that you live in Louisiana, you need to use some Louisiana sauce. Next time you go shopping, look for some Pig Stand or Jack Millers. Rub it on whatever you are cooking a bunch of times while its cooking. Sometime sI mix some Crown Royal and honey in it too.

I saw both of those earlier. Bought some Pruhommes BBQ seasoning to throw on the pork. The homemade stuff tastes great, but I still might spend $4 for a bottle of the stuff you mentioned.

I've used Sweet baby Ray's quite often in the past. The stuff I made ended up great, though, and was easy to make. Might have to try some other recipes.
