I still think it is high risk move but it all depends on your desperation level.
In this scenario, the enemy were within 100 meters of us. We had cover, but my Mauser placed me at a distinct disadvantage and I was hard pressed to look around my cover. Based on my knowledge of military tactics now, I realize that none of us civilian reenactors came close to having the training and knowledge an actual German squad would have had. The fact that no one was checking their rear ensured the MP40 and myself were elft alone to deal with a threat that should have been noticed earlier.

This same reenactment saw three GIs take out about ten of us. We were crossing an open area and were unnecessarily bunched up. A bush across the creek suddenly came alive with two Garands and a Thompson. Quick lesson in basic patrolling there.

I don't anything about how reenactment works... how do you determine when you're hit?

Some groups and organizations use the Graef system. This seems to be based on to the Army system of wound cards and Observer-Controllers. Our events would mainly use an honor system. If someone is pointing their weapon in your direction and you are in the open you take a hit. One downside to this is when everyone is an Aryan Superman or his Allied equivalent. The better units discourage this. Another downside is when everyone take a hit. I haven't seen that happen as most of the time we communicate with each other about who should and shouldn't take a hit. The simulated combat can get exciting, and using the honor system can allow a small group to simulate a larger group, such as the red Army reenactors taking a hill in wave assaults. One wave is mowed down, the next steps over them and the first gets up to form a third. The honor system works pretty decent in practice and at the end of the day gives us all something to bitch about. It also allows the more theatrically inclined to take Hollywood hits, sometimes destroying a piece of gear in the process.
