Default Thinking about a new optic setup...

Crunkers thread got me thinking. I really want to make my AR a SPR (Special Purpose Rifle).

So Im thinking about a setup something like this..

    http://www.burrisoptics.com/xtrtactical1.html

Except with this scope due to the higher magnification.

    http://www.opticsplanet.net/burris-t...iflescope.html

Ill use the rings in the first link and just mount that to a QD rail that will connect to my flattop, that way I can take it off and go to my flip up sights in needed. Unless I can find some other way to mount the Burris Fast Fire to the scope. And I need to make sure that the Fast Fire will clear the objective lens.

What is a "Special Purpose Rifle"? An AR with a medium-power optic and a reflex sight?

Pretty much. They have the ability to go from long range to CQ without having to swap any sights.

Only thing Im worried about is the eye releif with the red dot.

??? Reflex sights, at least 1x types, have unlimited eye relief. That's part of the point of a reflex sight. Mount it as far forward or back as you want, it won't matter.

Sounds like it will be an interesting setup, looking forward to pics.

Meant to say cheek weld, not eye relief.

Ah, that makes sense. Yeah, I've always gotten shitty check weld when using optics mounted on an A2-style carry handle, so I'd imagine a reflex sight on top of a scope ring would have a similar problem. If the cheek weld issue proves to be a dealbreaker, you could always go with a larger reflex sight (EOTech, Aimpoint, etc.) mounted directly on the top rail, with a magnifier on a flip-to-side mount ahead of that. It'd still let you transition from medium-power magnification to CQB reflex sight use without removing anything from the gun.

I already have a magnifier, but I dont really like them. they are cool and all, but they are HUGE. Its hard to get it mounted where you can get the proper combination or eye releif and cheek weld, and when you have it right, you can, its covering the charging handle. Plus the EOTech mags cost more than the EOTech.
