    Default I hate chiggers...

So long story short, me and some friends were clearing some thick thick grass around a pond to clear paths for a bush hog to come in and we ended up getting locked in the property overnight. No houses around for a 1.5 mile radius. And my legs have about 60 chigger bites on them.

What do you guys use to help the itch? And whats the rule on scratching chigger bites? I thought it was poison ivy so I didnt scratch them, but Ive been wanting to scratch the piss out of them since I realized it was chigger bites.

Of all the times I've spent in the field and woods, I can't honestly say I've ever gotten chiggers. Guess luck has been on my side, as has permethrin spray. Check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chigger#Treatment

I hate those things man. So far this year I've got into chigger colonies twice and pulled five ticks. It's starting to make me think that I don't even want to be in the woods that much this Summer. The other part of me wants to go hiking and probably shoot some small animals though.

Fuck that shit, I have never had these chiggers and I don't plan on wandering through their territory unprotected. That's a nice thing about living in a city. The bugs are all normal and usually not very big.

Where can you get that spray? It keeps them away? Im going to have to look into getting some. Cause we are going to go out there often.

They have red bugs/chiggers in the city. And as far as being small, well they are almost too small to see. I think they are like .5 mm across. Luckily most of the btes have gone down, but I have poison ivy on my arm now.

Damn I didn't realize they were so small. I have never heard of these before and judging by the picture itt they are the size of a mouse. Are they all over the place?

They are usually in long grass. But Ive seen them in regular length grass before. This is actually the first time Ive ever had a problem with them though.

I'm not sure if you can buy the stuff I have. Try military surplus stores or Ebay. I still have a case or so of military issue permethrin that is used to treat clothing. Spray it on, let it dry and it lasts for a few washes. Treat a mosquito net or tent with it and it works wonders. Last time I went camping I sprayed the entryway. The only bugs in the tent the next day were dead ones. It's also fun to get on your skin. Nice numbing sensation.

That might work. I use the military DEET for skin application if I'm going in the woods. More potent = more effective.

Bleach in a bath is supposed to help. I've nevet tried it though. I normally put alcohol on them. A generous spray of off should keep them clear.

Deet's bad for the environment, and when my family and I used it, we found that it smeared the markings on our cameras badly, even though we obviously didn't apply it to our cameras, and it go there due to indirect contact.

I use 100% deet, works like a charm. I think the environment will survive.
