Default New Thread for mah AR

The other thread is cluttered with crap, and I feel the need to dedicate a thread to this piece of art anyways:

    Current build specs:

    MEGA/Red River Tactical Lower
    Rock River Arms LPK
    Magpul MIAD
Commercial Spec (yeah yeah) Buffer tube
Command Arms CBS stock (its going away ASAP)
    Bravo Co. Sling Plate
    Troy Single point Sling

My camera takes horrible macro shots.

Well of course Im going to like it. I am a FDE guy too. lol

Nice lower. What kind of stock you getting for it?

And Im pretty sure you know, but DO NOT dry fire it with the upper off. It can crack the lower.

I'm not 100% sure yet. I'd love to get my hands on a UBR, but the wait on those is endless. I might just get a CTR and be happy. Plus that way I can keep my sling plate.

Although I do like the Sully fixed stocks... But again I'd lose my sling plate. No big deal, but still. I'd have to try one first anyways, I'm not sure if I'd like the length.

Of course of course. I'm just curious, should I leave it with the hammer forward or locked for the time being?

Just ordered a CTR in FDE. I guess that settles that decision.

Now, I wait. I think I might save my pennies and go with a Spikes Tactical CHF upper with my next paycheck instead of waiting around for random uppers to come in stock and hope its one I want. Spikes makes good shit, it comes with a Spikes buffer, and its pretty much what I'm looking for anyways.

    Good choice on the stock.

Im saving my money up for a VLTOR MUR upper. It will match my lower really good.

SOMEBODY likes Magpul, lol. "Stagpul" AR.

How do you like the MBUS? I just got my Matech in the mail about an hour ago. Its nice, and seems pretty idiot proof, but I'm still not 100% sure on whether or not I like the single small aperture. But then again, I never used the big aperture when I had it available to me either. Plus I've got good eyesight.

The small aperture is for long range, the big one is for close up. Only thing I dont like about the MBUS is that the apertures are too hard to switch between. They arent like a normal sight. If you have no fingernails, they can be hard to switch. But for a backup, I love them. I wouldnt use them as primary sights though.

And of course I like Magpul. They make great shit. lol

I own a few MATECHs and they definitely work. They are not the flashiest or most versatile, but like everything else used by the regular Army they get the job done. My M4 had an ACOG which precluded the use of the BUIS; the optic would have to be removed to use it, but it was there for backup. I've seen Soldiers qualify rather well using the MATECH BUIS when their M68 CCO went down or if they just plain couldn't shoot with the Close Combat Optic. As for the single small aperture, think back to your training. If the Air Force is anything like the Army, you were probably told to never use the large aperture on the M16A2 or A4. That training has stuck with me through the years, and it makes sense as the point of using your iron sights is to place accurate fire on your target.

Yea, the large aperture is only for stuff when you need to get on target really fast, and dont need to worry about being super accurate. But IMO all BUIS including the MBUS should be able to be folded down with the larger aperture the one that will be up when you deploy them, becuase if you REALLY need to use your BUIS, chances are the target is close, and you want to use the larger one.

Protip: Don't use acrylic paint to paint your rollmarks. It looks like absolute shit, and is a cunt to get out. Plus it leaves a nice nasty residue.

For some reason, not a single store (be it AC Moore, JoAnn Fabrics, Wal Mart, etc) carrys Testors paint, or fucking enamel paint in general. I had to special order the shit online. Was enamel paint banned or some shit?

FM: Yep, told never to use the large aperture. You would be correct, sir.

Unfortunately, all the hobby shops nearby have either closed down or moved far away. I hunted everywhere last night. I went to 2 different Wal Marts, Target, AC Moore, JoAnn Fabrics, even a little DnD game store that sells the Warhammer figurines, and THEY didn't have any paint either! It was ridiculous.

Oh well, at least this way I could order the exact colors I was looking for. Flat Red, Flat White, and Army/Marine Desert Tan.

    Painting the rollmarks right now.

I just accidentally painted "safe" red lol. Good thing I've got plenty of thinner.

When my safe and fire marks were red and white, I didnt want to spend $10 getting two bottles of paint just for that. So I sprayed some Krylon Fusion spray paint in a can and used that. Its already thin enough too.

Oh and I may have found a MUR upper for $150.

Yeah this shit is a bitch to get the perfect consistency. I did the white way too thin, so when the thinner dissolved it was all blotchy, and the red was too thick so when the thinner dissolved from that it was lumpy.

EDIT: Wow, just got my CTR in and I'm impressed. This is a VERY nice stock.

If all goes according to plan, I should have a RRA 16" HBA middy upper coming my way very shortly. Then my AR will finally be shootable.

EDIT: Wewt, my dad is awesome. He got me 10 USGI 30rd mags brand new still in the wrapper today. He's the ammunition custodian for his squadron, so he takes care of that shit and magazines are not accounted for, so if they go MIA nobody says anything.

    She's done.

I got the upper yesterday. I didn't realize RRA stuff had such a nice fit and finish. It mates perfectly with my RRT lower, no wobble or gap. No optics on it yet, just my BUIS. I'll be investing in a DD Omega first, then probably an EOTech later on. I am absolutely in love with this rifle. I'll probably get the barrel cut to 14.5 and turned down to a pencil profile in the future, but for right now I just want to shoot it. Pics and range report tomorrow.

A little late, but heres the promised pics.

    Specs are currently as follows:

    UPPER:
RRA Middy Upper, non-CL bbl, 1-9 (would have preferred 1-7)
    LMT BCG
    Matech BUIS

    LOWER:
    Red River Tactical/MEGA Lower
    RRA LPK
    Magpul MIAD
    Magpul ASAP
    Magpul CTR
    Troy Single Point

    Shoots absolutely beautifully.

Nice. Im assuming you plan on changing the hand guards?

My reccomendation would be a set of Daniel Defense OMEGA (or LITE) rails.

I love my OMEGAs. They were like $330, but worth every penny.

Hopefully my upper and lower will be in soon so I can start on my build.

Oh yeah, I'll definitely be replacing them with Omegas. I'd like a LaRue FUG to finish it off too but I don't know how comfortable I am with dropping $90 on a fucking VFG.

Get a Tango Down. I plan on getting a TD stubby when I get an extra $60.

Buy once, cry once. Ive learned that since I got into cars and ARs.

Didn't know anyone still used single point slings. I thought everyone moved back to the standard 2 point or one of the like 15 point tacticool ones.

Seems to be a lot of fans of tan ar-15's, hey at least they aren't the puke that the Remington r-15 is.

I plan on getting a single point sling for my SBR build coming up. They all have their advantages and disadvantages. I currently have a 2 point on my 16 in AR and I love it. But with the single point on the SBR, Ill be able to swap shoulders without having to do all kinds of fancy sling work.

Thats exactly why I like mine. Blue Force (I think) makes a fancy two point that boasts the same feature, but theres so much more effort that goes into it. You have to do some ridiculous shit like flip it over, yank some cord, do 4 backflips, and rape a goat before you can comfortably swap shoulders. Of course in their example videos that have some super-high-speed-delta-force-spetsnaz-secret-squirrel-operator show it so it looks like a piece of cake. With my single point and ASAP, its as easy as moving it to the next shoulder, and I still get most of the advantages of a sling.

Besides, chances are that this upper will be moved onto a different build, and this lower is going to SBR'd. Then the single point will make much more sense.

It only takes a few seconds to swap shoulders with my Gear Sector 2-point sling. But a one point would be even faster.

If you ever get another sling, look into the gear sector ones. Mine was like $60 with the two QD swivels, but I fucking love that sling.

    Fuck guys.

I think I'm going to build an SBR.

Shit. I kept telling myself I wouldn't get BRD but I want to keep my middy a middy, but still want an SBR. I feel like I NEED to do it.

Damnit. I am never going to have money again. Ever.

Well no sling at all means nothing to get snagged on stuff too but I mean. How often do you swap shoulders? If ya gonna be doing that just hold the gun in ya hands and don't worry.

Then again my rifle just came with a cheap leather sling made somewhere in Romania and is still rolled up in the box in the closet.

Try switching to a sidearm or walking all anywhere for a long time with no sling. We go to some property my friend has out in the middle of no where and walk around all day looking for armadillos, possums, rabbits, etc. Im the only one who brings a rifle and Im also the only one with a sling. Everyone else brings just a pistol. I carry my AR, one extra mag, and my XD45 with two extra mags.

IMO a good sling is just as important as good optics.

I think I know what kind of sling you are talking about. My buddy has a Romanian WASR and his came with some ugly leather sling. It works, but its almost too short IMO.

EDIT: Not to mention shooting long distances from standing is easier with my 2 point sling. It has a strap I can pull to tighten it up, and I can pull it into my shoulder and make it much more steady.

Well guys, I think I'm gonna do it. Fuckin' BRD. My girlfriend and I just broke up too, so that's even more money in my pocket.

This is going to cost me a pretty penny though, that's for sure. Nothing is going to be pre assembled. I'm going with billet recievers too, a MEGA lower and Larue Stealth (or maybe VLTOR) upper. This will hopefully be my duty rifle when I become a LEO as well, so I'm going for an ultimately reliable compact trunk gun with minimum maintenance. Thus I'll probably have a FailZero BCG as well, or at least a Young NM with minimal lube. It will be free foated, and most definitely 1/7 twist (probably a Noveske bbl). BUIS only, no FSB. Optics will probably be a low power ACOG, as I want accuraccy, but distance will likely never be over 75 - 100 yards.

    Input is welcome!

Good rule to live by: Dont put magnified optics on a SBR.

Go with something small and light. Like the new EOTechs, an AIMPOINT Micro, a Docter/Burris mini red dot, etc. Ill probably be going with an EOTech. Like you said, it wont ever be used over 100 yards, so why magnify it?

I do plan on keeping my front sight though. Its the strongest gas block you can get, and the last thing you want is your GB coming loose. If you are worried about it being in the line of sight, it wont. When you look through an EOTech or aimpoint (properly) the FSP pretty much goes out of focus.

And in all reality, a 10.5 in bbl (If thats what you are going with) is only good around 75-100 yards. After 100 the bullet isnt going the 2700 FPS it needs to be going in order to fragment and cause the right amount of damage.

As fas as fail zero, Id just go with a Youngs Mfg chrome BCG. Thats what Im doing.

Yeah I realized the optic I was referring to wasn't an ACOG anyways. Its the Trijicon Tripower. Uses no batteries (except for backup).

For the FSB, I will probably have one, just shaved down to a lopro GB. I like the FSB, I just don't feel like it belongs on an SBR.

Starting it already. Just ordered an RRA LPK (which I'll be sending to Bill for a trigger job at triggerwork.net) and a milspec buffer tube kit.

Id like to get a trigger job on my current AR. Cause I plan on putting a scope on it, so that would be nice. But for a SBR, I see no point in spending the extra money for a softer trigger.
