    Default Latest Impulse Buy

Well, for the first time in seemingly forever I bought another handgun. Not the Judge my wife wants to get her dad for Christmas, nor the 12-2 mentioned in this thread; hell, I didn't even check out the LEO supply stores, pawn shops or glance at a Taurus. The same gunsmith that carried the 12-2 had a few other S&Ws they got from a guy who sold his collection. A Model 10, another .38 and a .22 (didn't pay attention to the models), and a Model 19. The Model 10 was $375 or so, the others were all in the high $300's as well, and of course the 12-2 was $285, with those funky looking Hogue grips on it. Truth be told, I was going to buy it anyway, the cylinder was tight, there was no visible gap and the gunsmith assured me he had checked them all over. Then I took a look at the Model 19 without a price on it. There was a little holster wear at the muzzle, the bore looked great, lockup and timing were fantastic, and the face of the cylinder looked brand new, leading me to believe that the gun saw some carry but very little firing. Suffice to say it sits in front of me as I write this.

So, I am now the proud owner of my first Smith and Wesson revolver, a Model 19-5 with 4" barrel and wood grips. A little wear on the backstrap and muzzle, a small crack in one of the grip panels, and a smooth action that should be great for home defense or carry. Nothing fancy, just a standard service revolver. I need to call S&W to find when it was made but I am pretty certain it was in the late-'80's or early-'90's. Price was $365, not too bad if Gunbroker is any indication, but this damned Louisiana sales tax drove up the price to just shy of $400.

The LEO supply store will be my next stop to find a decent holster, some ammo and a speedloader or two. I should have both a holster and ammo already and speedloaders can wait, but it can't hurt to check.

I think you will be very happy with your Model 19. The 4" K frame is the perfect gun for me, i just love the way they balance, they just feel natural.

I believe the 19-5s were made from 1982 until the 19 was discontinued. S&W eliminated the cylinder counterbore on all magnum calibers in 1982 so the dash 5 is not a P&R gun.

One thing you need to be aware of is all K frame .357s is ammo selection. One of the weaknesses in the K-Frame is in the cut on the bottom of the barrel throat, in the forcing cone area, to accommodate the cylinder swing. When the 19-5 was issued, one part of production processes that changed related to how the barrel is installed in the frame. Barrels the used to be screwed and then pinned in place were now compression, “crush-fit”, into the frame to save on production costs. The force of compression could introduce stress and potential latent flaws in the barrel throat. Add to that the high velocity light bullets and issues soon arose. The main cause was determined to be the length of the 125 grain bullets. They are shorter than the 158 grain bullets and permit excessive hot burning gases to escape past the bullet into crush fit portion of barrel throat. The short bullets have a longer “jump” from the case mouth to the barrel lands and pick up more velocity prior to engaging the rifling. This causes a greater impact force on the rifling contact area. Another detrimental effect is the flame cutting of the frame as these super hot gases escape from the cylinder-barrel gap. The cut on the bottom of the barrel throat in K frame Magnums has been know to stress crack on even the pinned guns when not kept clean, but more so on the crush fit guns after 1982.

In general you must keep this area of the gun clean and inspect it often for cracking, data indicates that this type of crack failure occurs only rarely.

    Congrats on a fine revolver.

What was the .22 he had?? The K-22s are skyrocketing in price, Trying to find a nice one under $500 is getting hard.

I'll have to go back next week to find out the model of .22 they had. After I posted about the revolver, I went to a local LEO supply store and spent another hundred. They had a Safariland paddle holster for $20 and a Gould and Goodrich two-slot for $8, both leather and with the forward cant I prefer. I also picked up a couple of speedloaders and a box of Black Hills 125 grain +P .38 SPL. Fifty round box was almost $40. I did some drawing practice last night from the G&G, it was a little tight to re-holster and snap the thumbstrap at first but is fairly fast to draw from and the sights line right up from the draw.

I have to find my speedloader pouch (if I didn't sell it) and practice reloads as well. Being left handed, I used to be fairly good at a hand swap and reload, keeping the speedloaders on my strong side. Good thing I still have a box of .38 SPL blanks and maybe some snap caps to practice with.

Meant to address this the other day. I'm lazy when it comes to taking pictures and posting them. I'll try to get some up this week, if not today.
