Penn is such a piece of shit lol, the guy talks so much shit and is so full of himself it's ridiculous. I always root for him though, he's living proof that technique almost always overcomes size and strength. IMO if he is in as good shape as he says he's in, he will convincingly beat GSP. If not, GSP might take a decision. As much as I love GSP, and as awesome as GSP v. Anderson Silva sounds, watching Penn beat him, move back down to 155 to beat Florian and move back up to 170 to beat Alves sounds so much better.
Also I'm going to go ahead and say Machida def. Silva via KO.
Thiago Silva's style is tailor made for a Machida knock out. He likes to push the action and wildly overrates his own stand up. He's never fought a decently skilled opponent, and he's going to be face down on the mat if he tries to bullrush Machida with his sloppy stand up.

I feel the same way about Penn. I put him in the same category as a Matt Hughes* in that he's a total dick, but he's so good that it's excusable. Also yeah Machida should win via ninja destruction. This card looks to be all around solid though. There are even three undercard matches that I wouldn't mind seeing in Jake O'Brien/Wellisch, Fitch/Gono and Manny Gamburyan/Thiago Tavares.

Yeah...what a lazy fuck. That fight should have been a competition.

Less chili dogs+more training-vacation time during training is clearly the answer to that problem.

Anyway how crazy was Jon Jones? No doubt a future champ. Dude is only 21 and in his second UFC fight and fucking HANDLES Stephan Bonner. And how about that spinning back elbow? The man is a walking highlight reel. I'll take this opportunity to brag that Jones turned down a fight with me. He was reffing my grappling tournament and I was like 'you wanna fight' and hes like 'naaah man'. He didn't want none of my shit son.

That spinning back elbow was nice. The guy has a very bright future in the UFC. Of course he's obviously no match for you, smart guy turning that fight down.

Other than BJ/GSP and DHK/Karo most of the fights were pretty good though. I'm still glad that I didn't pay for it, but I think Jones/Bonnar and Machida/Silva alone would have made it worth the purchase.

On a side note, how did one of the judges give Gono one of those rounds against Fitch? He did nothing that even resembled winning a round imo...

Didn't see it. Also I thought all the fights were really good, BJ and GSP was amazing just because it was them and I was pretty much on the edge of my seat the whole time. DHK/Karo I thought was decently exciting too.
Also how the fuck was the Guida win a split decision he clearly beat the piss out of Diaz.

Yeah that one confused me as well. The judges must have been high or something last night. Had BJ not been 1. Lazy during training 2. Outweighed by 15 lbs. 3. Lazy in general and had he actually showed up to the fight it would have been better. It wasn't so much a bad or boring fight as it was a disappointment to me.

B.J. Penn's camp has filed a formal complaint with the Nevada State Athletic Commission over Vaseline that was allegedly rubbed on Georges St. Pierre's back between rounds one and two. UFC president Dana White said at the post-fight press conference that he was aware of the complaint, and said he personally witnessed members of the commission take the Vaseline away from GSP's camp and rebuke them in the Octagon between rounds.

"I saw the commission jump up there and flipping out," said Dana White. They said one of the guys was rubbing Vaseline on Georges' back in between rounds. It was one and two, I think."

"The guys from the athletic commission went up there and started screaming at them. Knocked the Vaseline and kicked the Vaseline out of the Octagon."

White added that "some Vaseline on a guy's back didn't change the outcome of that fight, but you don't do it," and said the blame should fall on the cornerman responsible and not GSP.

"If a guy was intentionally putting Vaseline on a guy's back, he should never corner a mixed martial arts fight again."

As for what becomes of the complaint now, White said it's out of his hands.

"Who knows. That's up to the commission."

Not saying that Penn would have won had it not been for that, but it's quite possible that the NSAC will rule it a no-contest because of it. That could have had a huge effect on Penn's ability to control GSP's head in the guard, and I did notice that BJ was having an unusually hard time doing that. I think that's a big reason for BJ becoming discouraged in that fight as well.

Of course his laziness and the fact that he started gassing out in the second round were the biggest factors in the fight.

Edited for evidence to back up this claim:

(In the third one the NSAC guy looked pretty irritated.)

I saw that, it looked like he was just massaging his shoulders or something. That might explain why Penn's high guard kept slipping off.
Anyway Penn has no excuses. He trained his ass off for the fight, he was in great shape, GSP just dominated him. He wasn't lazy, anyone would have gassed with GSP handling them like that.

Well I honestly don't think that I've ever seen Penn have that kind of trouble controlling someone in his guard. Either way, you're right. He doesn't really have any legitimate excuses for getting beat like a drum. I'm still sticking to the BJ is lazy story, because despite the way they tried to make it look like he trained hard for this one, I somehow doubt that he did anything differently as far as his training is concerned.

I swear these threads just consist of you two with my occasional input that no one responds to. well Mr. E does come in to talk about working out and stuff. though this is a little old who enjoyed watching BJ get molested? And then have BJ nuthuggers complain about "greasing" because they had nothing else to blame? I did!

Well the way I saw it, BJ was going to lose anyway, but GSP did get greased up. At least if he hadn't Penn might have been able to pull off a quick submission or at least kept GSP in his guard a little bit better. It's a dick move on the part of GSP's corner either way.

I'd say that's wishful thinking. I'm not disregarding the fact that it could have made a difference but I don't think it would have made enough of a difference even in hypothetical land.

Well like I said, I don't think it would have made a difference. Vaselining his back and shoulders is just a dickhead move if you're in the corner of an equally dominant fighter with a 10 lb. weight advantage(just guessing at the weight.).

    ^17 pound.
And while I personally think the only difference it would have made would be making GSP's ground and pound less effective and riding out to a UD, we can't say it wouldn't have made a difference. The fact is GSP's corner greased his back, making it nearly impossible for Penn to use his BJJ, which is arguably his biggest strength. We can't sit here and say it wouldn't have made a difference, no one knows "what if". It was blatant cheating and in my opinion should be ruled a no contest for that reason.
Of course that would suck because it would fuck everything up in the LW and WW divisions just for Penn to get his ass kicked again, but you can't have fighters flat out cheat like that in front of everyone with no consequences.

Oh neat. I wasn't sure exactly what the weight difference is but I knew that GSP cut to make weight and BJ came in under with a lot of extra pudge.

Now ITT we three discuss when we started watching MMA.

I'm not sure of the exact date or what event. But I know it was around my junior or sophmore year in high school (I'm class of '07). I just remember having an affinity for MMA for some reason and buying the Pride Legacy set 1 and watching the entire thing in 2 sittings or so and afterwards I bought Pride Legacy 2 then 3 and so on consecutively. After that I branched into other events Pride (GP and Bushidos). I didn't really care for the UFC until Pride's demise in 2007 but though I care about the UFC and their events, I still hope that one day another organization will come up to fill the empty Pride-shaped hole in my heart. Right now I'm hoping it's Dream but I wouldn't mind if it was Affliction or Sengoku. So that's my MMA (watching) biography.

Sadly enough, I didn't start watching until Ken Shamrock appeared in the WWF. Before that I was unaware that MMA existed. I watched casually until Sylvia/Arlovski and Tito/Shamrock fought, which I think was somewhere around the end of 2006. Since then I've kept up with it pretty regularly. I'm mainly a UFC watcher, but made it a point to watch Pride(Until they went under), WEC, Dream, Affliction, Bodog(Until they shut down, I swear it's the Fedor curse.), Strikeforce, IFL(Also shut down?), Cage Rage(I think that they're shut down as well, haven't seen an event from them in a while.) and EXC().

So basically I'm a pro wrestling convert trapped in a man's body.

Don't remember, probably sometime last year. Didn't get really into until around the summer(Griffin v. Rampage was my first ppv) and started training around the beginning of October.
Also not really related but I feel like ranting. It's really fucking frustrating not being able to get a fight. I'm only a 16 year old babby and I think you have to be 18 to get a sanctioned fight in NJ(or have parental consent, and im 99% sure my parents would not give that) so I probably won't be able to fight for like a year and a half. It's terrible when all of my training partners are starting to apply for fights and I'm stuck here with my thumb up my ass only being able to go to grappling tournaments. Fuck this shit, I have no doubt if I got matched up with someone in my weight class/experience level I would probably tool them. If anything else most amateur(and probs even pro) debut fights are based on who is more confident/aggressive, and god knows I have that up the asshole. [/rant]
edit: fuck, just got an email back from new breed fighters. 18 only. fuck my life

The thing with NJ is if you fight in an unsanctioned fight in any other state where you're allowed to strike to the head on the ground/knee to the head you cannot fight amateur in NJ and you have to fight pro. Anyway I just got a text saying my team is going to a muay thai tournament on March 21, so I'm actually pretty happy haha. As long as my parents let me it should be tight. Sucks cause grappling is my main strength, but whatever I'm definitely down for this.

You could always just ignore the fact that you've ever done it. There wouldn't be any real evidence that you've ever competed as far as I know.

Serious question raghead do you still do drugs since you're training? or like nick diaz said does your training get in the way of your marijuana?

Nope I've actually stopped doing drugs all together for the most part. Smoking weed has never affected my cardio, its the munchies that are killer.
Anyway if all goes well I'll have an amateur muay thai fight on march 21st . Eating clean, no drugs and trying to get in a couple rounds of bag work everyday(classes are only twice a week). Plus I have to bring up all my grades mad high to convince my parents to let me go. Also SATs lol. Gonna be a busy month.
Anyway, even though my kick boxing is iffy at the moment(mostly due to nervousness fighting my training partners who are all bigger than me) I'm pretty confident. Each fight is three, two minute rounds lol. So pretty much I'll be able to go methhead speed non stop. As long as nerves dont get my I'm pretty sure I'm going to kick ass.

Lol at Koscheck. What a moron, he obviously wasn't taking him seriously. The whole fight I kept saying "what the fuck is he doing, why is he throwing that overhand right so sloppy he's gonna get knocked out". And look what happened. Fucking idiot, the UFC starts building him up for a title shot and he just throws it away.
edit: also, beautiful triangle from maia. that is actually my goto submission from mount and one of my favorite submissions so i thought that was awesome.
as for sanchez v. stevenson: wow. amazing fight, one of the best i've seen in a long time. the scrambles were absolutely beautiful, great stand up from both. i thought sanchez overused the bodyshot to uppercut combo way too much though, and got hit pretty hard a couple times because of it. also you could tell the weight cut affected him in the third round. the way he had his arm down(for those of you that dont know its a classic boxing trick when you're too tired to keep your arm up, keeps you defended and lets you snap a good jab from waist) at first i thought was just to throw stevenson off, but then after he went for the takedown after that i knew it was because he was getting tired. he'll definitely be a force at 155 though, i hope he fights sherk next.

Sanchez/Sherk and Stevenson/Huerta would be the two matches that I'd like to see come of this. In all honesty the lightweight division has enough talent that I can think of a half dozen people off of the top of my head that would make a great next opponent for Sanchez.

As for Koscheck, he obviously didn't take his opponent seriously, but I'm going to agree with him on the early stoppage. He had clearly recovered by the time he hit the ground, and even put his hands up to defend before the ref stopped it.

Maia, that guy never fails to impress me. His Jiu Jitsu is just out of this world. Sonnen is no slouch on the ground, but Maia made him look like terrible.

The Marquardt/Gouvernietalabomba(Yeah I'm not even going to try to spell that.) fight was pretty decent as well, as was all of the one minute of the Dos Santos/Struve fight.

All in all it was a good event. It seems to me that the last couple of free events have actually been better than the PPVs.

Yeah Dos Santos is a machine. He should fight the loser of Gonzaga/Carwin next.
As for the early stoppage, normally I would agree but there is a rule in certain places(england probably being one of them) that the fight has to be stopped after flash knockouts. So yeah, it was a justified stoppage.

Well Koscheck is a dick so I really don't like to take up for him much. If that's the rule in England I guess I support the call, but I still would have liked to see how the fight played out because I don't think that it was anywhere near over at that point.

I don't know if it's the rule in England, but I know there are a couple states with that rules so yeah it could be.
IMO Kos would have probably been subbed if it kept going. Thiago is a BJJ guy, and I don't think I've ever seen Kos do anything off his back. Plus he was rocked pretty hard.

    From mmaweekly.com:

"Just as quickly as it was announced, a UFC heavyweight title unification bout between current champion Brock Lesnar and interim titleholder Frank Mir has apparently been scrapped.

Fiveouncesofpain.com reported that Mir suffered a back injury that has kept him from training recently and caused his removal from the UFC 98 main event bout.

Multiple MMAWeekly.com sources, however, indicated that it is a knee injury that has precluded Mir from training. They also said that he recently underwent surgery to repair the knee, which will sideline him for the next four to six weeks to allow the knee to sufficiently heal.

The UFC had no comment at the time of publication. It is currently unknown if the promotion will try to find a replacement for Mir in the bout with Lesnar, or if they will move to insert a new UFC 98 headline bout."

    Frank Murr is skurred.

He is still fighting according to Yahoo! Sports.
Personally, I believe Mir is reading all the hype about this on the internet and laughing his ass off. Remember a couple months ago how he talked about spreading misleading rumors about being injured to mess with Big Nog's head? I like how everyone forgets that so quickly.

They just announced it on ufc 96, the fights postponed. On a side note, Hamill just knocked Munoz tfo. Then I couldn't understand his victory speech.

Also, Rampage Jackson is an idiot, I can only hope that he dies in a house fire in the next few days.
