Default It's That Time Of Year.

Roll up, roll up. Come see the spectacle of pure random speculation!

Thats right, I will be the first to post a mock draft here at CD. They are useless, 95% wrong, and tedious to write. But Im bored, and they are interesting in the aspect of analyzing a teams weaknesses. I have no idea how these players are going to play in the Pro's, I am merely guessing who will select who. I am writing this at work, and I work in the marine trade, so its a slow time and I have hours to kill. Please comment after on how I have too much time, and have wasted it. (Oh, and I wont attempt to predict specific trades, thats just dumb.)

I will be posting them in batches of 5, whenever I feel like doing another load. Which will more than likely be very soon after this one.

    Detroit Lions

Needs - Pretty much everwhere. Theres not a position on this team other than WR than DOESNT need help. But most importantly, they need a QB, OT and DE. In that order.

Matthew Stafford - Georgia - QB

Yes, I am going with the boring, most popular choice for this pick. Detroit needs a QB like a cure for cancer, and there wont be anyone with the raw skills available when they pick later in the round. Expect The Lions to trade up into the 10-11th picks to pick up an OT, as they need someone to stop Matthew Stafford from becoming Joey Harrington 2.0.

    St Louis Rams

Needs - Their needs start on the offensive line. You dont need to be a genius to figure out that their line is old, and breaking down. They also need help in the Defensive backfield.

Andre Smith - Alabama - OT

Although I think that Jason Smith from Baylor could very well end up being the better Pro, I think the Rams go with Andre here. His run blocking in college was far too dominant for them to ignore. Stick him on the Right side for 2 years, learning from Orlando Pace, and let Steven Jackson run wild behind him for the next 5 years. When Pace calls it a day, they have a LT in the waiting.

    Kansas City Chiefs

Needs - Tyler Thigpen has earned another year to prove himself, so I think their biggest need is on the entire defensive side of the ball. This defense was TERRIBLE last year, and any help they can get will make a big impact.

Aaron Curry - Wake Forest - LB

This makes the most sense, and now that Pioli is running the show, I would cement this pick in stone is Curry is still on the board. He is Pioli's kind of player.

    Seattle Seahawks

Needs - Despite having Deion Branch on the roster, they need help at WR big time. Also, they need some interior defensive line help. Both are huge needs for a team that is 1 bad season away from being taken apart piece by piece.

    B.J. Raji - Boston College - DT

They need help here, and I think they will defy the common opinion by passing on Crabtree. Raji's stock is rising in front offices, and I think Seattle will jump on him at number 4.

    Cleveland Browns

Needs - Defense. Defense. Defense. Defensive Line. Defensive Backs. Plain and Simply... Defense.

Malcolm Jenkins - Ohio State - CB

Whether or not his skills will translate to the pros, I don't know, but one thing is fairly simple. The guy is a beast. Aaron Maybin is a serious contender here, as his basic skills could work in their defense if he bulks up a bit. But I think Jenkins has a short trip over to Cleveland to begin his pro career.

I'd like to see the Rams take Andre Smith. I'm curious to see what he's going to do in the pros, and I like the Rams pretty well.

I'd like to see the lions forget about a QB for one season. Of course that means they'll suck this season, but at this point, no one expects more. I'd like to see the Lions pick up a couple OT before a new QB because every time we pick up a new QB and not OT's the QB ends up getting the Lions nowhere because he gets sacked every other play. It's retarded how bad the Lions offensive line is. Like seriously, I urge Mr.E to try out because he could probably do a better job than anyone who's on the team now. Detroit fans have been depressed for a while, we could use something to pick us up.

Edit: And actually you failed to mention that if the Lions manage to pick up Cassel, we could probably hold off another season on a QB.

If the Lions get Cassel, it would cost you ATLEAST the number 21 pick. And detroit wont give that. And Cassel wouldn't "hold off another season", he would be the Franchise QB.

Detroit have 3 of the first 33 draft picks, and OT is insanely deep this year. They should pick up Stafford, get an OT like Oher at 21, although they may have to move up to 14-15 to get Oher. Culpepper can take another season of suckiness, but they will be typical Detroit if they dont take a QB.

Indianapolis failed on MANY QB's with first round picks, that didnt mean they had to pass on Manning. I am not saying Stafford or Sanchez is Manning, but the principle still holds true.

Cassel will be free agent. We'd be lucky as shit to get him, Culpepper's on his way out, he won't be able to take another season of the beatings that come with being the Lions QB. Speaking as a stolid Detroit fan, it can't get any worse. I think we'd all rather see another 0-16 season where the team actually gets better rather than a quick fix. Throwing another rookie QB into the mix isn't gonna save the Lions. And I think maybe watching quarterback after quarterback draft in and drop out, we'd be better off focusing elsewhere until we can survive a season.

When Indianapolis picked up Manning, the rest of the team wasn't utter shit. With the Lions it is(with the exceptions of Special Teams and WR). Typical Detroit with an improving O line is a team I'd much rather see than typical Detroit with yet another rookie QB who has no one to guide him and is getting the stuffing knocked out of him every Sunday.

I'm guessing that nobody wants Andre Smith now because he's an effup.

If the Lions dont take a QB at number1, sit him for a year, then start him year 2, then that only proves that the whole organisation is to blame, not just Millen.

It is a Quarterback driven league, and unless you trade for Cassel, I highly doubt he will want anywhere near Detroit, not when teams like the Vikings and Bears are out there, especially in the same division.
If the Lions dont take a QB, they sure as hell better hope they go 0-16 to get Bradford, as that is the ONLY thing that will excuse them passing on a QB.

And for the record, the Colts O-line was pathetic, there defense was almost as bad as the Lions was last season and they were still 2 years away from getting The Edge, so that arguement has no validity.

So uh what is this I hear about the eagles possibly getting marvin harrison? I know it has nothing to do with the draft but I don't care, I hope they get him.

The dude may be 37 and Injury prone in his old age, but he can still flat-out-play.

Eagles get him, they instantly get elevated to the Panthers/Giants/Vikings level for next year.

    Cutting T.O. won't help.

    Neither will firing Wade.

Basically what needs to happen is the whole team needs to refocus solely on football. Not on legal issues, not on relationships with pop stars...just football.

T.O. Is a joke. The man is a cancer on EVERY football team he has been on. Anyone who says anything different must either REALLY like him, or be in denial.

And Until the Cowboys do what you said above, I won't buy into them!

Yeah, the whole organization is to blame. Millen is an epic fuck up, but a 0-16 season is not ever the fault of just one person. If the Lions grab a rookie QB, they'll start the season off with him riding the bench, then once they lose enough games they'll start him, corrupting and ruining him forever. The Lions have proved that they can't sit by and watch the team lose when they have an untested QB sitting right there on the bench. There is no doubt in my mind that if the Lions pick another new QB they will only be digging themselves deeper.

I understand what you're trying to say, but you need to look at this in the long term, we can't afford to waste another draft pick on yet another QB who won't pan out. Detroit's time and picks would be better spent elsewhere so that when we actually do get a QB, they can survive for more than one season. 90% of QB's can't take the kind of punishment Culpepper took this season and for rookies that rate goes up to 100%. And make no mistake, if the Lions draft a new QB, he will play this season mark my words.

Personally, we need safety help BADLY, but someone to play opposite to Mario wouldn't go amiss!

One of the biggest mistakes in football is predicting future success from past failures.
Detroit has enough draft picks to build a solid football team, and it is up to the coaching staff to realise Stafford isn't ready.

Rule No. 1 of the draft. Never pass up a potential franchise QB.

I think we're gonna have to agree to disagree.

It doesn't matter what the coaching should do, it's what they will do. And they will play Stafford if the get him. I money back guarantee it. Not a shadow of a doubt in my mind. The Lions have shown their colors, to expect something different now would be idiocy.

Rule No. 2 of the draft: Never put a QB before a team.

Look, Culpepper can still play. I'd rather the Lions take a lineman at number 1 and give him some time back there.

I agree. We need safety help. Or maybe we could look toward a better backup QBs if that Rosenfels trade goes through. I'm not sure we're so ready to forgive him for flying like a fucking idiot and losing that Colts game for us.

That was the exact moment I was done with Sage.

Idea - Detroit, Get Chris Simms. The guy has improved a hell of alot since his injury, and even then he was a half decent starter.

And Culpepper can play for 1, MAYBE 2 years at an average at best level. What does Detroit do then without a long term plan? Plus there is no Lineman who is good enough to go No. 1 this year. Aaron Curry is an option, despite what Detroit people have told me.

You trade down to a team looking for receiver or quarterback help.

To say that Detroit's first round QB pick won't pan out isn't accurate. Detroit's first round QB pick won't pan out in Detroit.

I don't know what these rules of the draft are, but the single overwhelming rule of successful draft is don't draft a quarterback when you have a broad spectrum of needs. They need help on offensive line and at just about every defensive position.

This is the year that the Texans make it to the playoffs no matter who they pick up.

Just wanted to throw that out there.
