Default Dan Gilbert and his 100k fine

Quick recap for those of you living under rock:

Gilbert, owner of the Cleveland Cavs got fined 100k by nba for this angry letter he wrote following Lebron's signing in Miami:
Dear Cleveland, all of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers supporters wherever you may be tonight; As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier. This was announced with a several-day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his "decision" unlike anything ever "witnessed" in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.

Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.

The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.

There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you. You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal. You have given so much and deserve so much more.

In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight: "I personally guarantee that the Cleveland Cavaliers will win an NBA Championship before the self-titled former 'king' wins one." You can take it to the bank. If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our "motivation" to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.

Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there. Sorry, but that's simply not how it works. This shocking act of disloyalty from our homegrown "chosen one" sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And "who" we would want them to grow up to become.
But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called "curse" on Cleveland, Ohio. The self-declared former "King" will be taking the "curse" with him down south. And until he does "right" by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.

    Just watch.

Sleep well, Cleveland. Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day... I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only: DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue...
    Dan Gilbert
    Majority Owner
    Cleveland Cavaliers
The fans reacted with huge signs of support for Gilbert and his letter, some even trying to raise funds on his behalf to pay the fine. At first I thought haha that's kind of neat that the fans show that much support. Then after seeing this, http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_yl...tfine-lemonade, I was instantly irritated at the thought of him accepting any of this money. I am sure it is a non issue and anything raised on his behalf will be donated to a charity or something (it better) but the concept that people would want to fundraise for a megamillionaire like Gilbert over something silly like this bothers me.

Fuck David Stern. He fines Cuban for tampering and Gilbert for slandering, yet he doesn't do shit about Amar'e trying to get Melo and Parker to New York.

Tidus you're a fucking idiot. There's no rules against players collaborating and recruiting.

(which is why the NBA is a joke of a league and David Stern is a joke of a commissioner for allowing such a ridiculous and stupid grandstanding labor arrangement to ever occur.)

Ok well you're wrong. But I don't even need a rulebook to know that intuitively if it were against the rules, there would have been fines for it.

Logically it makes no sense to prevent players that aren't under contract from speaking to other players about their teams. You probably don't because you're a mouth-breathing breeder, but it's common practice in every industry to research a potential employer.

then what is number two? (team sports)
this is pretty much the order:
    football
    basketball
hockey/soccer (they are the same one is on ice the other is on grass)
    volleyball (women's)
    baseball/softball

I'd never actually watch the last two unless I was promised beer but women's volleyball edges out baseball because the right match is a total titparade and baseball will always be the most boring team sport

of course there are non-team sports but those will always be far less exciting than football and basketball.

    also:

    95. What is tampering?

Tampering is when a player or team directly or indirectly entices, induces or persuades anybody (player, general manager, etc.) who is under contract with another team to negotiate for their services. The NBA takes tampering very seriously and may impose stiff penalties if it is discovered, however the league will not investigate unless another team files tampering charges. Here are some examples:

    * The Miami Heat were discovered to have tampered with Pat Riley in 1995 by negotiating with Riley while he was still head coach of the New York Knicks. The Heat "settled," and avoided league-imposed penalties, by compensating the Knicks with $1 million and their first round draft pick in 1996.
    * After Will Perdue left San Antonio in the 1999 offseason to sign with Chicago, he commented to the press about the possibility of the Bulls signing Tim Duncan and/or Grant Hill in 2000. The league considered this to be tampering, and issued Perdue a warning.

You may have noticed that when general managers and other team personnel talk to the press, they are careful to avoid talking about specific players who play for other teams. They do this in order to avoid tampering.
    Let's try that again.

    One more time, with feeling.

Why did you choose to focus on the "player" aspect and not the "under contract" aspect?

Y'know, the part that's actually required for it to be tampering.

Let's see if I can address all of your idiocy in one post (I doubt it, but I'm ever the optimist.)

    Regarding Stoudamire:

Quote Originally Posted by Atmoscheer View Post

It seems that I am able to grasp the concept of contractual agreements. Highlighting the word "player" doesn't change that.

Regarding the "summit" of Bosh, Wade, and James:
The three of them were out of their contracts. It was illegal for teams to negotiate with players until a few days later (Thursday, I think.) Players had already declared themselves free agents, thus preventing themselves from being contacted by their own teams. If they were still under contracts, the Raptors/Cavs/Heat could have called them each, respectively.

And, once again, how do I know that all of these actions you're bitching about were legal? I don't need to check a rulebook, because there are various others who do that for us, most notably the various teams that would have an interest in benefiting from the misconduct on the part of a player or manager for a competing team. If Melo had been tampered with, the Nuggets would have filed a grievance.

I don't know why you think you are going to be able to play armchair rules lawyer better than a multi-hundred million dollar league and a billion dollar media industry. Okay, that's a lie... I know why, but it doesn't make you any less dense.

Yes, because Stoudamire talking about two players under contract totally doesn't violate the whole "Tampering is when a player or team directly or indirectly entices, induces or persuades anybody (player, general manager, etc.) who is under contract with another team to negotiate for their services." thing.

Let me go ahead and highlight something for you.

"who is under contract with another team to negotiate for their services"

Fuck you. You're wrong. Just man up you prideful piece of shit.

Which players were under contract that he was enticing, inducing, or persuading to negotiate with the Knicks?
