I think it is a simple fact of atheism or "non-religious" becoming more popular. In the latest polls it is at 15% in the US. The more people who share a common ground, the more likely it is to come up.

I think coquavin was commenting less on the frequency of it coming up and more on the context in which it comes up. Some people throw atheism around like it makes them geniuses and instantly better than anyone and everyone who isn't an atheist.
