Yeah, the Tobey Maguire films were pretty much based in the "Ultimate" universe where Peter Parker is now dead. He was still super-smart there, but that's where he was the teenager with the photo gig etc. etc. etc. IIRC

Ultimate Spider-Man uses mechanical webshooters too. The writers of the Tobey Maguire films thought it would be easier just to have Peter shoot organic webbing from his wrists instead of writing him inventing the shooters.
