I signed up for Canada World Youth (basically Katimavik international), so starting July 8th I leave for Mozambique for three months, then three months in British Columbia as a kind of debriefing.

I do not envy you. Africa (real Africa, not Eqypt) is the only place on the planet I have no interest in going. The People's Republic of Mozambique (Portuguese: República Popular de Moçambique), was a self-declared socialist state (commonly known as a communist state in the West) that lasted from June 25, 1975 through December 1, 1990, becoming the present day Republic of Mozambique.

After gaining independence from Portugal in 1975, the People's Republic of Mozambique was established shortly after the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique ("Frelimo"), which was led by Samora Moises Machel, engaged in a brutal civil war with the Mozambique National Resistance ("Renamo"), a guerilla movement initially financed by Rhodesia (present day Zimbabwe), but later replaced by South Africa, who supported and financed the group.

The People's Republic of Mozambique enjoyed close ties with the People's Republic of Angola and the Soviet Union, both of which were communist states at the given time. The People's Republic of Mozambique was also an observer of Comecon ("Council for Mutual Economic Assistance"), which was an economic organization of communist states.

Over the next several years, FRELIMO pursued numerous socialist policies, including nationalization of land and large industries, centralized planning, and heavy funding for the national educational and health systems, which however, remained weak for decades in independent Mozambique, and still are among the most ineffective and underfunded in the world.

The first member to be admitted without having any constitutional link to the British Empire or a Commonwealth member was Mozambique, a former Portuguese colony. It was admitted in 1995 following its first democratic elections and South Africa's re-admission in 1994.

Mozambique joined Francophonie because... I have no idea. But it's only an observer, like Lithuania and the Ukraine.
