Well, he makes a fair point. Most manifestations of democracy are systems where popular rule is sovereign but other elements are included to avoid tyranny of the masses.

I'd personally say that national democracy (as we understand it) is legitimate but I'm far more in favour of regionalised government with strict constitutional limits. As long as those limits are enforced on the government the form the government takes is of no consequence; however, electing the candidates who adhere to a constitution is pretty much the only way to keep them honest.
