Glover raps as Childish Gambino,a name he found from a Wu-Tang Clan name generator.He released an album entitled Sick Boi on June 5, 2008. On September 17, 2009, Childish Gambino released the album Poindexter. A pair of mixtapes entitled I Am Just A Rapper, and I Am Just A Rapper 2 were released in close succession in early 2010. Robert Scahill added his producing expertise helping with the majority of the tracks. The track listings for those albums consist of the name of the song "he" raps, followed by the song he raps over. His third album, Culdesac, was set to be released on July 2, 2010, but a couple of last minute additions caused the album to be delayed for a day. The album was made available on July 3.Glover has stated in interviews that on Sick Boi and Poindexter he felt he had to hide behind gimmicks, such as pink hoodies, but with his subsequent projects, he has touched on more personal subject matter, including family, schoolyard bullying, troubled romantic relationships, suicidal thoughts and alcoholism. He has disowned his 2002 album, The Younger I Get, as the too-raw ramblings of what he calls a "decrepit Drake."

Glover first came to attention for his work in the sketch group Derrick Comedy, and is best known for his role as community college student Troy Barnes on the NBC comedy series Community.

Rolling Stone unveiled the most awkward interview we've seen in awhile—actor Donald Glover interviewing rapper Childish Gambino. Which, in case you're unaware, have quite a bit in common, namely sharing the same body.

Glover also made a straightforward inquiry no other interviewer would ever dare to ask: "Why do you rap like shit?" Childish Gambino's response? "Mostly because my voice is annoying." Whether you agree with that assessment or not, you have to admit, Childish Gambino's lack of egotism and ample ability to laugh at (and even lambaste) himself is pretty damn refreshing.

"Well, I listened to a lot of indie music. I feel like a lot rap heads don’t really listen to a whole bunch of music and are closing themselves off. People feel that if you like T.I. then you won’t like Animal Collective or if you like Jeezy you’d probably hate Lykke Li, and I don’t think that’s the case. Hip-hop is the most eclectic type of music ever, because you can stay up on anything. If the beat is tight, the beat is tight. I’m from Atlanta, so I love Outkast. I listened to a lot of their stuff when I was younger. I listened to the Wu-Tang album. I listen to “All That I Got Is You” by Ghostface like a billion times. I remember being a kid and hearing that and being like, “Oh shit, that’s like me.” [Laughs.] My cousin and I used to sleep in the same bed. [Laughs.] It was the first time I ever felt something. I listen to Kanye of course. I feel like Kanye paved the way for people like Drake, Wiz Khalifa, and rappers who rap about their life. Not every rapper is from the streets. Jay-Z’s story is not my story and I say that in the album. I love Jay-Z, but I can’t tell that story."
