Well they are a legendary band but everything after ...And Justice For All was just shit, including the black album; and even AJFA for the most part is lacking in quality compared to their three earlier releases which were phenomenal.
With the release of Death Magnetic, it can be safely said that the band definitely is trying to revive their old sound which is the only sound they should be producing (Load, Reload, St. Anger; just god awful) but Hetfield's voice is showing its age (like it's starting to suck) and the vocal melodies and lyrics are just laughable. As far as the album goes, it's the best thing Metallica has done in about 20 years.

to live is to die
the only metallica you'll ever need to listen to
Death Magnetic is surprisingly decent.
Wow what a loaded question.
They both seem to fit.
people still listen to metallica D:
They aren't gay
but they are hit or miss
Their new album cover looks like a diseased vadge
quotes from the internet
I liked a lot of their old stuff. Since they got haircuts they have sucked a bit more.
It's a fucking magnetic coffin.
I actually like the new album alot.
Give me fuel give me fire give me that what I desire

Don't really like Metallica... what a bunch of prima donnas.
Death Magnetic isn't bad, some of the riffs will sound really unoriginal like they were put there just to fill the space, and other riffs are pretty sweet. I donno, I've enjoyed listening to it, they're not duplicating their old stuff it sounds like modernised thrash. Every genre's sound changes quite a bit over 20 years, bands like Testament, Exodus and Slayer are still making thrash but don't sound like they did in the 80's. So yeah I just listen to the album and take it for what it is, and I like what I hear. It's nowhere near Ride The Lightning, Kill em All or Master Of Puppets, but still not a disappointment. I'm pretty satisfied to hear them play heavy shit again.
Old stuff was good, tone sucked balls
Death by Magnet is supposed to be good I haven't heard a lot of it
I pretend that St. Anger and Death Magnetic never came out, and they stopped making music back in 98.
Death Magnetic seems to have a bit of a distorted mix, probably to make the album sound "older".
Not heard the album, but from what I have heard its the same old stuff. Not sure when they've ever had lyrics worth listening to throughout their whole career but they have had some cool riffs. I agree with the people listing 2-3 songs of theirs that are worth listening to.
Their newest album wasn't the best, but certainly not the worst. One or two songs kind of grew on me, but I wouldn't say I'm a diehard fan.
Whatever you do don't send me a copy to download.
Metallica did well on And Justice For All, Ride the Lightning, Kill 'em All, and Metallica.
After that they were shit, then when Newsted left they were complete and utter shit.
Final verdict-Great then, shit now.
PS-Load gets points for actually having a picture of a load on the cover.

MoP and AJFA is their best work. New album sounds... a thousand times better than St.Anger, but still just a pretty obvious clinging attempt to be what they used to be. A failing attempt.
At least they tried though. Lars' snare drum sounds less like a biscuit tin now, which is a plus. Still shocking considering throughout the whole recording of St.Anger and Death Magnetic nobody went "hey man your snare drum sounds like a Slipknot percussion piece reject".
