Rap Equipment
I got paid today from both of my temp jobs. So I have about 400 dollars that I can spend. Does anyone know of any equipment I should buy? I wanted something to make beats with. Or rap material that could teach me how to rap better.
Also do you think that 20 months of practicing is good enough to be able to rap good? Or do I need more practice?
When are you going to let us hear you?

I wanted to get some equipment so that I won't have to keep using what little free beats you can find. Then I want to record it.
I wanted to practice more. So I practiced for about 18 months. Not nonstop.
I wanted to have some money so I can buy some equipment. I have some now.
I want to get an email address just for rapping so it is easier to find my notes instead of finding them in my old email inbox which is so crowded with junk mail.
So hopefully after I can get some beats I can make a cd.
I'm glad I had all that practice, otherwise I would have been way worse.

Satori, go to your nearest electrical store. Immediately mention you have $400 but emphasise you only need the BARE NECESSITIES. youll need at least $200 worth of cable, spend the rest on headphones. The rest will fall into place.

Rick Scarf, yes I could save the money, and it might be a good idea as I will not know if I can expect shifts. But having nice stuff could make my life better. Waiting around for a shift isn't very fun. I'm sad that I don't have a full time job. Nice stuff makes me feel better. Even if I can't turn the equipment into my dream job.
Sailor Jack, good idea about the bare necessities. Why do you need cable? Is the headphones so you can hear how the music sounds.

Hopefully this stuff doesn't get too heavy as I use the bus for transportation.
Well for a decent vocal mic to start out you'll want to get a Shure SM58 which is like $120 new, spend the rest to get the best used (better bang for the buck if pre-owned) 4-track mixer you can find and hook that shit up to your computer, you'll be laying down beats in no time. You surely already have some type of headphones, use those for now as they'll be fine just starting out. Check out pawn shops for the mic and mixer, plenty of people made the same wrong decision you are about to so they had to pawn their equipment to put food on the table and pay rent.
edit: or get a Shure PG48 and save some money there but you'll take a big step backwards in terms of quality, especially in a studio setting
Your best bet though is to send the $400 to me and when you realize this was a terrible idea and need the money I will send you $300 back, so you will end up with $300 instead of $100-150 from the pawn shop or craigslist. As your accountant I would highly advise this.

If you want to make beats, you should look into Reason 5. There is a way to obtain this software for free but i won't disclose where.. but it certainly shouldn't be that hard to find.. if you want to buy Reason, a new version just came out a few months ago. Reason 6 is absolutely amazing.
People say Fruity Loops is better for novices but you need to buy a bunch of Vsti's.. or again, obtain them for free.
for actual hardware, something like MPK25 would be nice.

Why would you need to store your lyrics in an email? Ever hear of Google Docs? Or Evernote? Or your computers document program and dropbox? GET AN LIFE!
I use yahoo. For me if I don't get a lot of junk mail and have a good title it isn't usually to hard for me to find stuff I want so far.
Do you have a rapper name picked out yet? If not might I suggest Satori Everything Xtreme (SEX)

I wanted to buy rap equipment so that I can add beat to the lyrics I wrote. So headphones, beatmaker, a microphone or whatever I need.
Why don't you just plug your headphones into your mic jack (its shitty quality but it works) and use that as a mic to record yourself banging on some buckets or pots and pans or something. Use a free sound editing program and plug the headphones back into the headphone jack to listen to it. That's all free and you can see if people even like your stuff before you invest a penny into it. Eric Clapton can play a shitty $100 guitar awesomely, but someone who sucks at guitar can't pick up a $4000 Fender and start playing great.

Rick Scarf, I would rather just use free beats than pots and pans. If you think I should hold off buying equipment than maybe I should. But one day I might want to get beats once I have more practice. Perhaps I could have six months more of practice before deciding to buy equipment or wait another six months until I reach a decision that is hopefully the best for me. After all, you are probably right I could use more practice.
we'll never know until you post your beats up, post them up and we can tell you if you are awesome or if your raps need more work

Oh. I see. Yes. It is hard for me to judge my level of skill other than saying improving, getting worse or staying the same. Someone else could do a better job than me. So I could just think of this as a hobby because I think I would need more practice to be a pro. In 2010, I spend more time recording. In 2011, I spent more time writing lyrics. But I am not sure what is better- really good lyrics but not being able to sound as good or okay lyrics but excellent sound. I could try and focus on both speaking and lyrics but the sounding good part is harder, especially since I usually don't like the sound of my voice when I record it.
the thing is, you'll always be in doubt unless you can get other people's opinions.

That's true. I'm not as worried about my lyrics. I worried that my voice sounds kind of soft. Even on the phone and in person, people sometime tells me.
