A vicarious compliment implies it's only a compliment insofar as he identifies or empathises with his girlfriend, which he doesn't appear to as he is a bit jealous and needy really, whilst in fact the compliment mostly lies in someone finding something that he has (admittedly implausibly) attained attractive.
