hahah yeah but the hulk's final transformation and the reveal of his "secret" were totally excellent and worth the price of space turtles.

my favourite joke, and also my favourite character moment:

"monkeys? i don't understand--"
"I DO. [beat] i understood that reference."

i didn't think it was a perfect movie, but there was really nothing WRONG with it. it didn't have the weird tone and melodrama and stupid characters of thor (and loki wasn't a whinging emo), or the "laying out the pieces" feeling of captain america, or the feeling of staleness and wasted time of iron man 2.

the characters were well written and treated well, the action was exciting, and surprisingly well-shot by relative newbie joss, and it didn't try too hard and wasn't unutterably stupid and ham-fisted in handling its politics/message/themes/etc. i thought the plotting was a little round at the edges, and i thought the stakes of the final battle weren't really high enough, but other than that it was well above par.

also, agreed about scarjo -- with my low expectations, she cleared the bar with room to spare.

favourite parts:

-both black widow interrogation scenes
-"i'm sorry, that was mean. i just wanted to see what you'd do."
-"phil? um, his first name is 'agent'."
-banner & stark hanging out doin' science
-hawkeye vs black widow
-AC/DC overriding the PA system in the SHIELD plane as iron man arrives on the scene (perfection)
-"better clench up, legolas."

also it was gratifying to see stark go back to the circular chest repulsor thing.

honestly i can't BELIEVE i didn't see this coming
