I find French film overwhelmingly charming, on the whole.

Speaking of which, here is a movie that isn't a must-see in the classic sense (ie Casablanca or Lawrence of Arabia - which both are genius films): Girl On The Bridge. I'd put it on the list anyway because it basically sums up French film in one film. The obsession with luck and the whimsical (without going overboard) shine.
