No I'm upset because the show peaked in season three and it's been bullshit stringing along for 2 fucking seasons and it's not changing at all in this one.

Regardless of when time travel was included in the story from a writing/concept creation perspective, Gwahir, when a show spends 3 seasons not being about time travel and then suddenly adds a stupid time travel twist in the 4th season which, oh by the way, doesn't even have a logical or believable mechanic, the term you're looking for is "jumping the shark."

The first 3 seasons were about learning about the island and its inhabitants (new and old) in order to get off the island. The 4th season and everything afterwards is about manipulating time travel. If they had disclosed up front that the story was going to be about time travel, no one would have watched because it's a stupid fucking idea that never works except in one movie from the 80s that made it work by lampshading the fact that they didn't give a shit about logic or realism and, oh yeah, they named the movie "Back to the Future" not "Whiny Teenager and Wacky Doctor Become Friends."

There's nothing worse than people who carp and whine about shows they still watch. Atmo, just follow through on your threat to stop watching and read about eps on Lostpedia the day after.

Popular Mechanics analyzed the possibility of time travel using Lost's rules. Michio Kaku claimed that "the show's producers did their homework". According to Kaku, "there's no law of physics preventing this kind of time travel—just a lack of know-how … [but] it would take a very advanced civilization to really do this".
Just because you say something about time travel don't make it true.

Not that I agree with Atmosfear about the time-travel thing, but Popular Mechanics is probably the worst imaginable source for reliable scientific information.

I think I'm a worse source than Popular Mechanics for time travel - hell, I still believe planes stay in the air due to wizard magic.

Yeah, Lost doesn't violate any rule of physics with its time travel mechanic because it doesn't bother to explain them in any meaningful detail. Except for the rule of physics where time travel in the conventional (Back to the Future, Lost, Butterfly Effect, you name it) sense isn't possible.

simon, there isn't a way out of this one; time travel NEVER makes sense, which is why it's obvious you've jumped the shark. No matter how well-researched, designed, and constructed the world is in which its introduced, time travel rains on the whole parade. I'm sure there are shows that lampshade the time travel aspect early that get away with it (just as Back to the Future did), but didn't Star Trek try this 60 years ago and fanboys are still complaining?

Also, Mal, planes do stay in the air because of magic. Haven't you seen Peter Pan?

this seems less like reasoned critical analysis of shark-jumping and more like atmosfear's personal bias about time travel stories

    i mean just saying

because other than saying "time travel ruined lost" you haven't actually said anything

a lot of us seem to think that around season four the show got its energy back, got reinvigorated, got exciting again and started telling exciting stories and taking us actually into the rabbit hole that is The Island instead of skirting around it and stalling for three more years

You realize that's the definition of shark jumping. People are bored with the show so you throw a bunch of bullshit in hoping to regenerate interest at the expense of the original focus of the show. Thanks for proving my point.

it is not the definition of shark-jumping. something can't get better when it jumps the shark, otherwise the designation would be a stupid one. shows change tone and direction all the time, mostly for the worse, but occasionally for the better. i hardly "proved your point" by saying that lost's change of tone and direction made the show better.

writers made a decision to give the show an end date at around the end of season three. that's why they were able to stop stalling, the pace picked up and they started actually facing the show's mysteries. not answering, but facing.

and clearly the writers didn't "throw a bunch of bullshit in to regenerate interest". as it goes on, it gets more and more obvious that, yes, there has been a grand plan all along. if you can't see that, well, i don't know why you keep watching at all. you're clearly just going to get frustrated with all the sci-fi bullshit that you insist the show is not actually about.

as if the time travel and sci-fi stuff WASN'T always the point of the show. seeing dead people? giant smoke monster? the numbers? pushing the button to keep electromagnetism at bay? desmond's little trip back in time in season 3? the black rock on dry land in the middle of the island? jesus, i don't know what show you're talking about, but the sci-fi has always been the underriding force in lost. season 4 is where they brought it to the surface and said "hey guys, we're going to finally deal with all this mysterious bullshit that's been making you crazy".

Gwahir.... why? I mean I'm with you in disagreeing with Atmo's assessment but you're arguing over pure opinion.

well i wouldn't feel any need to put up a fight, but atmosfear's tendency to treat his opinion as fact makes it exactly the kind of thing that incites an argument from me. i just can't resist when someone gives me that obnoxious, fourth-grader bullshit of "thank you, you've just proven my point".

    also, he's, well, wrong.

    interesting thought

he did seem more interested in people than in the island, certainly, but i think he was protecting the island

everything we have seen insinuates that the island is a good place, a special place (eg. when locke saw into the heart of the island, white light, but when he saw the smoke monster, terror and blackness; also the fact that it heals; also the fact that smokey doesn't like the island should lead us to assume it is a good place)

i do think his interests lie with the island, but because the island is a benevolent/humanitarian kind of thing

Well, other people seem to go absolute batshit with 'the sickness' for no apparent reason that is unrelated to smokey. This turns them into homocidal folks, like Rosseau, who murdered a large portion of her crew under the assumption they were 'infected', when Claire is the new Rosseau and has the same 'sickness' that Sayid has. To me, this implies Rosseau was truly the one who was 'infected' and this potential 'infection' could be the reason the island should be kept secret.

i, for one, don't think rousseau was infected. i mean, the guy she shot back in time CLEARLY was (man! so evil!!) and danielle in seasons 3-4 proved to be really actually pretty darned sane. i mean, crazy because of circumstance, certainly, but not brain-addled by some disease.

i'll wait and see about claire. but i don't think danielle had the disease.

i think, though, there's something in "claire is the new rousseau". (pregnant when got to the island, baby now taken away. hmm.) what if there are certain parts the island needs played, and different people play them at different times? "candidate" seems to refer to anyone who is a potential "new jacob" according to smokeylocke. locke himself is the new smokey evil thing. if i were a betting man, i'd say the big final conflict would come down to jack and locke, obviously. i can't really think of how else this applies, but i guess it was worth throwing out there.

it may inconvenience you (i'd be interested to know how), but there's nothing unclear right now (that shouldn't be unclear; ie. that isn't part of the mysteries of the show). call him evilocke, jacob's nemesis, the man in black, who cares. everyone knows who you mean. just put up with it.

Jeez gwahir, she just made a point about it being annoying that he hasn't been named yet. Okay, so it's not the most annoying mystery in the show but you don't have to be such a dick about it.
