When I heard oh-so-long ago that they were re-doing Star Trek with new actors, I was scared.

When I heard that JJ Abrams, who has come out and said that he was not a Trekkie, and was never interested in Star Trek was directing, I was appalled.

When I heard some of the casting decisions, I was down-right turned off. How could these people take over for the crew of MY ENTERPRISE?

However, when I saw the first internet teaser trailer, I was intrigued.

Then I saw the second one.

And the third.

And some clips.

When I sat down in the theater mere hours ago, and the lights began to dim, I was apprehensive but hopeful. Would they destroy my beloved Trek?

A very short 2 hours later, I stood up, feeling like I had watched one of the best films I had ever seen.

Normally I'm not a big fan of the more recent action-packed-try-to-pull-in-as-many-people-as-you-can-even-though-it's-a-star-trek-film films. However, this film was fucking magnificent.

Major events happen in this film that did not happen in the original Star Trek universe, and as far as I could tell, everything is explained quite nicely. I couldn't pick out any lose ends, and I'm a big fan of trying to pick shit apart.

Don't go into this moving expecting to see your normal slow-paced Star Trek film. Right from the beginning you start out with an EPIC SPACE BATTLE. The film is shot very much in JJ Abrams style, with the camera always moving, and always close in on the action. It reportedly caused a bit of motion sickness with some of the IMAX crowd, but it was quite watchable in a regular theater.

The film moves along at a very brisk pace, and that's really my only complaint. Normally when you sit down to watch something from the Star Trek franchise, things tend to plod along steadily, but much slower most other movies. Star Trek moves, and it moves fast. So fast, in fact, that you're probably going to miss a lot of the small things that are going on.

The acting was superb. Chris Pine and Karl Urban played Kirk and McCoy beautifully. The facial expressions and speech patterns brought in just enough of the original characters to make you believe you were really watching younger versions of them on screen. Chris Pine was the perfect Kirk. He took all the good bits of Shatner, the swagger, the smirk, and blended it with his own.

And then there's Zachary Quinto. While it took me awhile to see past Sylar from Heroes, he really was a much younger Spock. He played the part beautifully.

Simon Pegg was the Scotty we love, full of energy, vigor, and humor. John Cho pulls off Sulu quite well, considering his limited amount of dialogue, and Zoe Saldana plays the Uhurua we really all wanted to see (in more ways than one).

The acting, the EPIC SPACE BATTLES, the visual effects, the splashes of comedy all help you overlook the weakest part of the film, which is the plot.

Don't get me wrong, the plot was good, but it's completely overshadowed by everything else.

It's your typical Star Trek plot. The Federation vs. Bad Guy(s), culminating in the ultimate battle at the end of the film. However, even The Bad Guy in this film oozes awesome. Eric Bana plays a Romulan completely bent out of shape and looking for some misplaced revenge over his lost wife & child. While he looks very little like the Romulans you're used to, he doesn't act like it either, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. He's cool, almost chill. Very unlike most of your Star Trek supervillans of previous films. They did an awesome job of humanizing him as a villan, and it really works.

I'm completey astounded at how awesoem this film turned out. As a die-hard trekkie, I loved it. My wife, who's not as big of a trekkie as I was, loved it just as much.

I think any Sci-Fi fan who's even remotely familliar with Star Trek would love this film, and because you're all internet nerds reading an internet forum, you're going to love it too.
