But really, the game is designed with friendly fire in mind. I'd rather play the game as intended rather than a dumbed down version. Perhaps that's stupid, but that's my reasoning.

DAO has everything that has made its past classics great... times 1,000,000. The characters are superb with excellent voice acting, the story is rich and highly nonlinear, the combat is exciting, tactical, and varied, and there are unexpected surprises and new twists at every turn.
And it is LONG. Going through one version of the main quest line without side quests only lets you see 45% of the game.
The only areas where I think it's arguably deficient are in a rather weak rogue class and maybe the somewhat unexciting itemization. But both of these points are debatable.
