I feel sorry for that damn pig, they ought to at least hook him up with some pig buddies/girlfriends so he's not all alone.

You seem to have misunderstood what "quarantine" means....

Still, even if it dies, surely they can just get another pig from somewhere else

Uh, no, I know what "quarantine" means. I'm talking about the conditions in which the pig is kept even when it's not in quarantine. Even if this pig was taken out of quarantine, he would be all alone--the OP makes it clear that he is the only pig in the entire country. I'm saying I feel sorry for animals that are kept in captivity without any contact with other members of their species, which is how this pig is being kept even when he's not in quarantine. The quarantine in this case means keeping the pig separated from people and other animals, not from other pigs, because there ARE no other pigs.
