what you seem to be missing (inexplicably, because i've repeated it several times) is that i'm arguing that it's qualities extrinsic to the child itself that make killing it not a good thing. i'm not arguing that killing babies is okay.

intrinsic qualities are insufficient reason that killing babies is bad. i'm saying: if intrinsic qualities were all that mattered, it would either be okay to kill babies, or not okay to kill babies, and also not okay to kill cows and dolphins and so on.

(edit: forgot to mention that this obviously applies to 'retards' as well)

I did miss that, I apologize. I misinterpreted your argument in that respect. I disagree with your assertion that babies do not have intrinsic properties separating them from other animals though. That intrinsic quality (in my opinion) is their humanity.

well, that's speciesist. which is a bad thing. if an ape started talking and seeming like a (human) person, i think there's no philosophically watertight reason to treat it as anything less than a person. it seems like a pointless thought experiment, but i maintain it's important.

if humanity is so important to you, you need to define what that is, and say why -- and, if you could, point out what's wrong with my personhood position.

Heh, I believe defining humanity is a bit beyond my philosophical capabilities. I will say, though, that if an ape started talking and acting human that I believe it would have achieved humanity. I don't really view humanity as an intrinsically species-based thing so much as I view it as a quality of complexity.

Your personhood position both excludes some adult humans and includes some adult animals (dolphins, at the very least, I know are capable of preference satisfaction). I hate to sound all American, but I just think that there are some certain inalienable rights that come with being born a human. I don't view being speciesist as a bad thing. Philosophy is all well and good, but it is all theoretical. Not everything has to be philosophically justified to be okay.
