Default APS March Meeting Conference 2009

So I just came back from what is probably the world's largest annual gathering of physicists, the American Physical Society's March Meeting. There were over 7000 presentations, and mine was one of them.

It does not cover all topics of physics, mainly just those that are funded the most extensively and have the most immediate applications to technology.

If you have any questions, ask them itt and I will try to answer them. Results may vary.

What was the topic of your presentation?

    Was it well received?

Did you come on that guy's face?

    1) enhancement of fluorescence through plasmon resonances in ag nanostructures

    2) Yeah I think so. I actually gave my presentation right before some famous guy whose presentation generated a lot of interest, so I had a huge audience.

    3) Actually, he came in my mouth.

are most of the presentations really only 12 minutes long? or is the structure more geared towards individual questioning

I'm pretty jealous, I would love to go to that conference.

What field of physics is like the "it" field? The one that gets most funded etc.

    That's a really broad question...

    Well....

*There's a big effort to try to develop hydrogen storage techniques for hydrogen-based energy.

*Graphene is the "flavor of the month" topic. (Graphene is a single sheet of graphite with unusual electronic properties.)

*A lot of physics is being devoted towards biology (fluorescence microscopy, understanding locomotion in biological systems etc.)

    Err, there's more too...

Um the structure is geared toward fitting in over 7000 presentations in 4.5 days?

Because of the time constraint, pretty much only one result can be presented with minimal background explanation.

The field that gets funded the most is condensed matter physics, as it has the most immediate impact on technology. This is nothing new.

As I said above, the fotm topic is graphene.

So I totally just wikid this and found out that I understand 98% of all of this thanks to my recent semiconductor class.

Legend has it that a former king of the Geats was resurrected, had the the "y" and the "c" in his name accidentally transposed, gone gay, and is now a mediocre engineering student who will go on to become the greatest physicist of his generation.

The end times are soon to follow.

    No, it was fucking awesome.

Here are some more hot topics that have come to mind:

*Metamaterials with engineered structure on a sub-wavelength scale that can be used for aberration-free super-lensing (where sub-wavelength features can be distinguished) and cloaking

*Organic photovoltaics. They are far cheaper than amorphous silicon solar cells, though their efficiency is currently lower. Nonetheless, their incredibly low cost still make them useful in certain applications, and if their efficiency can be increased, they will drastically reduce the cost of solar cells. I thought I heard somewhere that organic photovoltaics could in theory have a much higher efficiency than amorphous silicon could achieve.

Does anyone still care about physics now that we've discovered how to blow ourselves up?

Not true; physics will keep on being relevant until we've developed a portable matter disintegrating ray.

Actually, Stephan Hawking managed to cheat on his wife after he was wheelchair bound. Don't ask me how...

I was just making a general assumption, which I clearly failed on.

But I am sure there is some horrid disgusting food item making it around one of the many twists and turns of your abdomen.

I had about 6 graham crackers(broken apart graham crackers), three stuffed shells(they weren't extra-mondo-super shells), and one slice of garlic bread that was approximately 1/2 inch thick.
I hear the voices inside my head. They counsel me. They understand. They talk to me.
