Sure it's not the hammer & sickle, but I doubt many Islamic countries would enjoy re-familiarizing themselves with a state that crushed the sovereignty of Afghanistan.

I doubt zeroslave's wish for a reconstituted USSR was so literal that it requires all the 'stans rejoining.

EDIT: Plus, it's not like they had much of a choice about "familiarizing" themselves with Russia the first time around, ha ha ha!

Actually they somewhat did, considering that the areas later turned into their own Republics (Turkmen, Uzbek, etc.) were basically Russian colonies where Russian chauvinism was rampant. Under Stalin the movement for ethnic equality achieved its highest levels, two good reads on this being Affirmative Action Empire and Tribal Nation: The Making of Soviet Turkmenistan. Later on however, under Brezhnev specifically, ethnic equality went downhill and these regions got treated basically like colonies again.

I'll check those books out, thanks for the recommendations. I'd be pretty surprised if the Central Asian republics ever seriously had the option to leave the USSR at any point, though.

10 minutes of fascinating clicking and reading has led me from Union_State (which I had actually never heard of, which surprises me) on wikipedia to Teutonic knights and from there to historical inhabitants of Malta.
