Also, nothing in that song is actually ironic. Ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife? No, no irony there.

yes, but isn't that the irony? the fact that she's so brutally retarded?

it would be ironic that a song called "isn't it ironic" doesn't have anything ironic in it, but the fact is, several of the things she says ARE ironic

edit: although i guess the amount of dumb, unironic stuff in it does make the song ironic enough

Like? I think there's 2 at most. I still think that makes it sufficiently ironic that someone with a hit song called ironic hasn't actually grasped the concept.

edit: didn't see your edit. thx live topic

i wiki'd it and she had a pretty alright explanation for it -- it essentially is ironic (dramatically speaking) in that it's the narrator's (not alanis herself but a character) view of how the world works, like from the mindset of a frustrated nineteen year old

if that was the intention well then well done

Yes but let's face it, that wasn't the intention. She just didn't think it through. Neither did most people and that's why it sold billions. If she'd just admitted that then I'd have more respect for her but she tried to bullshit it so I don't.

i'm not in the business of seeing into people's intentions

i'd rather believe she knew what she was writing, even if that makes me naive

I'd rather believe she knew what she was writing but we both know the chances are she didn't.

uhh when i read the wiki it said this:

For me the great debate on whether what I was saying in ‘Ironic’ was ironic wasn’t a traumatic debate. I’d always embraced the fact that every once in a while I’d be the malapropism queen. And when Glen and I were writing it, we definitely were not doggedly making sure that everything was technically ironic. It’s a testament to the fact that we didn’t think it was going to be put under the microscope by 30 million people. For me the sweetest moment came in New York when a woman came up to me in a record store and said, ‘So all those things in the “Ironic” aren’t ironic.’ And then she said, ‘And that’s the irony.’ I said, ‘Yup.’ To me it’s a real snapshot of a nineteen-year-old’s definition and version of how life worked at the time. All that ‘Ironic’ touches on spawned all my future inquiries into and current understandings of the mysteries of life.
which translates to (in my mind): "i was nineteen and dumb who cares lol"

but it wasn't a character that was supposed to be someone other than alanis herself from reading that imo

Maybe he believes success is relative?

Sure, we might see him as a fry cook in a studio apartment, but with enough weed I'm sure he sees himself as a regular Rockefeller.

Any stoner with 'enough' weed sees themselves as successful.

This should be everyone's view. Unfortunately the US government(along with too many Americans) don't seem to like allowing people their constitutional rights when it isn't convenient for them.

Well grandstanding on a moral high horse is a good way to win votes, so I can't entirely blame them for that, even if I dislike the actual results. This sounds like I support what they do (I don't), but I'm pretty sure it won't change at least until a new generation of politicians takes office, and even then...

It isn't a moral high horse though, that's the fucked up part. Nearly every bit of pot propaganda has historically been a downright lie. It is hypocritical and immoral to deny people the freedom to smoke pot if they want to. Or deny them to use any substance really. Thankfully the pot movement has some serious legs at this point and I can't see it doing anything but progressing from this point on. With so many states with medical legal, many more that have bills and California pushing for legalization I don't see how we won't have federal legalization in any more than 15 years and I think that is a pretty conservative estimate if we keep moving at this pace.

It is the moral high horse. By villifying something and setting yourself up as a crusader against a perceived evil in your consituency, you can make yourself a contender. It's old hat, but plenty of politicians drum up attention or positive polling for themselves by denouncing the evils of drugs when an election is aronud the corner - it makes you seem like a stand-up member of the community, a crusader for the well-being of the neighbourhood. If the stigma surrounding pot was gone, it wouldn't matter, but enlightenment takes time.
