I doubt it is surprise, more like wow this is a terrible thing to happen to someone and I hope she is ok. That has to be a traumatizing thing to deal with and I would imagine that kind of thing would take years of therapy for people to deal with. Maybe I'm wrong but I feel like that could really fuck someone up.
