Yeah, but the fact is, somebody is going to win the lottery, you may as well throw your buck into the hat (if you play more than once a week you're a retard who shouldn't be allowed an income). You have the same chance as everyone else.
Tell that to the people who've won. You can go on about odds all you want but people do win the fuckin' thing. I wouldn't call it a 'sound investment' either, but then again, I don't (very occasionally) play the thing to make a return on my £1 coin. I play on the off chance I can retire before I turn 22.
I won the lottery and invested heavily in northern rock
post niel, I can use my winnings and a small loan to just about buy LWS

Fair enough, but the people who win are fools with a lot of money.
It's not like I need the money I use to play the lottery (which I hardly play anyway). It's not like it could be spent any better either. Let's say I spend £20 a year on the lottery (which is a stretch), what would that get me that would be more productive?
A lesson in probability theory
I understand probability perfectly well. You, on the other hand, don't seem to. This isn't like the chances of an asteroid hitting the earth because that either does happen or doesn't. Somebody does win the lottery. Pretty much every week.
OK, I'm falling on my ass here. I'm not concentrating, I apologise. I'll think of a better response later when I'm less pre-occupied.
Where you're going wrong here is that it's not of much personal financial use to you that someone wins the lottery.
Unless you manage a bank exclusively for people who take part in the lottery (ok, I am trademarking this bank right now) your odds are the important ones, and they are tiny.
It's of huge personal financial use to me if that someone is me (and, technically my ticket has the same, albeit remote, chance as any other ticket).
Where you're going wrong is that you seem to think I look at this as an investment when really it's nothing more than light gambling that isn't going to get my legs broken outside a casino or get my material possessions repossessed.
Cast Magic Missile
For some reason I am not worried about this in any way.
We'll see how I feel in twenty years
