I know it must seem nice to think that some people find your primary quality endearing but the truth is no one in real life does. No one besides the same kind of sweaty, nerdy people. Why would you even make that post you douchebag.
do people not get that I'm an asshole yet? Also I'm proud of my epic nerdiness

I dont see how it would be interpreted like that. You would have to be going the speed of light for a while to even get past where you would normally die from old age. Say you are 20, and will live to be 80. You would have to travel faster than the speed of light for 60 years. And you didnt really time travel. You just waited for 60 years.

And time travel is what we do everyday. You sit there, you are traveling through time. Alot of people take that into consideration when saying one can travel through time.

In a dispersive medium, however, they are different because the refractive index is a function of wavelength, which means that the different wavelengths travel at different speeds. Wang and colleagues report evidence for a negative group velocity of -310c, where c (=300 million metres per second) is the speed of light in vacuum.

Their experimental set-up is remarkably similar to that used to slow light to a speed of just 17 metres per second last year. It relies on using two lasers and a magnetic field to prepare a gas of caesium atoms in an excited state. This state exhibits strong amplification or gain at two wavelengths, and highly anomalous dispersion - that is, the refractive index changes rapidly with wavelength - in the region between these two peaks.

Wang and colleagues begin by using a third continuous-wave laser to confirm that there are two peaks in the gain spectrum and that the refractive index does indeed change rapidly with wavelength in between. Next they send a 3.7-microsecond long laser pulse into the caesium cell, which is 6 centimetres long, and show that, at the correct wavelength, it emerges from the cell 62 nanoseconds sooner than would be expected if it had travelled at the speed of light. 62 nanoseconds might not sound like much, but since it should only take 0.2 nanoseconds for the pulse to pass through the cell, this means that the pulse has been travelling at 310 times the speed of light. Moreover, unlike previous superluminal experiments, the input and output pulse shapes are essentially the same.
...and although they say they can't transmit information faster than the speed of light...

But as Haché explains, many existing information systems are based on coaxial cables, and the current top speed for data is just two-thirds the speed of light. If the impedance of such cables were adapted, pulses sent at frequencies close to the absorption band could transmit information at speeds approaching that of light.
I guess it's a technicality that can be argued from either side.

I have a feeling that this is about to turn into an episode of Bill Nye the Science Guy or something. I love science but physics isn't strong point.

Djwolford I mean no disrespect to you but you don't know what you are talking about. Read up more on special relativity and think about it again.

Fair enough. Like I said, physics isn't my strong point. I just argue for the fun of it 99% of the time.

Really, I don't understand how it would not make any sense. (Because it does) Anyway, if you want to continue arguing about this, go talk with Einstein.

I feel that I can not explain this theory well since I am not a physicist. I would read about time dilation. If I do happen to be wrong then I would appreciate if you would cite your findings. I kinda doubt that you will though.

I didn't say it was possible to travel faster than the speed of light and zipzap through time, I said it was possible to speed up the speed of light.

I guess I was wrong when I said we hadn't done it yet.

Oh man, I created a monster. This is exactly what the superman geeks were talking about, 'cept people here are actually quoting relevant articles on the issue.

Killuminati quit talking in paragraph form.

I tend to gravitate towards nerdy guys. Mostly guys that play video games, not guys that can come at me with excessive knowledge about quantum linear nuclear physics and crap like that. i'm pretty sure those few words that i just strung together make no sense.

What do you have against me gina? I can't even talk in paragraphs now?

And yea the rest of that post made no sense.

    Oh God...

I would love to get in on this, but, Jesus, my midterm is tomorrow.

One thing I will remark on is this: Consider an object so dense that it actually bends the fabric of space-time. Einstein also held that upon reaching one end of the universe you would end up on the opposite side essentially looping space-time. Now this object of immense density actually falls through the fabric and connects with the other side, we'll consider these things..black holes. Thus allowing travel from one space-time to another.

Time-travel by FTL speeds or even light speeds simply shouldn't be considered unless we are scrambled into photos and shot through something (consider it like Willy Wonka transmitting a kid through signals)

I don't know if it's really objective for nerds to discuss whether nerdiness is an endearing quality or not.

Well it really was a question of "have you run into people who truly look down on you for or are repelled by your nerdiness". But yeah.

To be honest, I don't come in contact with that many people who are not nerdy or geeky in some sort of way. So to answer your question, no I have not run into people who were repelled by my (relatively mild) nerdy ways.

Well, I'm really nerdy and so is my best friend. We both love comics, anime and Coheed and Cambria; but we only talk about it with each other since no one else around us can carry a conversation about vampires or werewolves.

I'd guess that it's more because he consistently displays shitty taste in music. Not liking Coheed and Cambria is acceptable.

I mean I play mmorpgs and rpgs are my favorite genre of game, from D&D to Final Fantasy etc.
